Ways to Pay for Individual Therapy
-
It is your responsibility to learn your benefits and pay any out-of-pocket costs [just like you would with any other healthcare provider].
You can call your insurance company or visit their website to learn about your benefits.
A good question to ask: Does my deductible, co-pay, or co-insurance apply to behavioral health [codes 90837 and 90834]?
If you want to move forward using insurance to pay for individual therapy, please know that you will be required to upload photos of the front and back of your insurance card AND an official ID (i.e. Driver’s License) to your client portal.
If you have an HSA of FSA, you CAN use these funds to pay for individual therapy expenses, but NOT for late cancellation fees.
-
If you are covered by any other insurance besides BCBS (commercial and medicaid), Aetna (commercial and medicaid) or Medicaid (Healthy MI plan), you may qualify for reimbursement from your insurance company if you have Out-of-Network benefits for behavioral health.
You can call your insurance company or visit their website to learn about your benefits.
If you choose to move forward with this payment type for individual therapy, you will pay session fees at the time of service, then submit invoices to your insurance company for partial reimbursement. These invoices are provided to you by your therapist.
If you have an HSA of FSA, you can use these funds to pay for individual therapy expenses, but NOT for late cancellation fees.
-
If you have decided that you would like to move forward with therapy without using insurance, you will pay session fees at the time of service using a credit or debit card.
Payment Information
Payment is due at the time of your session. I do offer some reduced-fee appointments, and if these are currently unavailable, I can provide you with a list of local low-cost mental health services in the area. I can, by request, provide a receipt, or “superbill”, that you can submit to your insurance carrier for reimbursement purposes if you are hoping to use out of network insurance benefits. It is recommended that you contact your insurance company prior to beginning therapy to determine the out-of-pocket costs. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions regarding fees, payment, insurance, or if your financial circumstances change over the course of our time together.
Helpful questions to ask your insurance before you book your first appointment:
Do I have mental health benefits?
What is my deductible and has it been met?
How many sessions per calendar year does my plan cover?
What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
Is approval required from my primary care physician?
Good Faith Estimate Notice
You have the right to a Good Faith Estimate outlining the expected costs of your medical and mental health care. This ensures transparency, especially for clients who are uninsured or choosing not to use insurance. Under federal law, providers must give you an estimate of the total expected charges for non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy.
You can request a Good Faith Estimate from any healthcare provider before scheduling a service. If you receive a bill that exceeds the estimate by $400 or more, you have the right to dispute it. Be sure to keep a copy of your estimate for your records.
